Many of the contest winners become staples in modern percussion literature. Cash awards totaling $4,500 are distributed each year.

Instrumentation and category restrictions are determined by the PAS Composition Committee each year and the deadline for entries is April 15th. The 2011 Categories were Unaccompanied Solo Vibraphone and Marimba Quartet. This year's winners in each category are:

Synthesis consists of 10 beginning, 10 intermediate, and 10 advanced etudes. A variety of musical and technical concepts are discussed, and supplemental exercises are provided for each Marimba etude.

Q & A!

How would you describe the genre of your compositions?

In a word, contemporary. As music (both concert and pop) progresses, I find it harder and harder to place things into clear 'genres'. I think my work has begun to "cross-pollenate"; my concert works often have clear pop influences, while my pop works generally contain a level of composition usually reserved for "classical" music, or the concert hall.

What are your aspirations, as a performer and composer?

It's every musician's dream to be a rock star. Whether we know it or not, will admit it or not, that's what we all want. However, I think those of us who can find a personal meaning in our musical endeavors are the truly successful ones. My aspirations are simple; to continue writing, to continue playing. If by doing so, I can reach out to people and give them something they didn't know they were missing, then it's even more rewarding.

Would you consider composing for video games?

I have been playing video games since I was three years old. They've been a part of my life as far back as I can remember. And what sticks with me the most are the sounds, the music. I can remember music from games I don't even know the name of anymore. Game music has certainly influenced the way I write, as well. If I had to choose one "dream job", it would probably be to compose for games and anime.

If offered a film score, would you take on the project?

Like game music, I find film scoring to be an incredibly powerful form of expression. Whenever you combine two or more arts, the sum is always greater than it's parts. Some of us remember certain movies simply for the scoring. It's certainly something I would like to try my hand at.
